In real life, the conversation took a few years and emails to sort ideas and merge a literature on institutions, evolution, regional and national development. The article has been used by others to study urban plans and regeneration, technology and innovation, climate change, adaptation and resilience, economic development policy, regional leadership and growth and futures methodology itself. In 2008, some of these fields that cited the article were far apart. The article helped flesh out co-evolution in systems theories and its practical dimensions.
